Ransomware and Your Business: How Encrypted Backups Save You

Ransomware can lock a business out of its own data overnight. Here's how it spreads, why paying rarely works, and how a solid backup strategy makes you resilient.

Ransomware is one of the most disruptive threats a small business can face. One click on the wrong attachment, and your files are encrypted and held hostage. The businesses that recover quickly all have one thing in common: good backups.

How ransomware gets in

Most infections start with something ordinary — a phishing email, a malicious attachment, or a compromised password. Once inside, the malware spreads and encrypts everything it can reach, then demands payment for the key.

Why paying is a bad plan

Paying the ransom is risky: there’s no guarantee you’ll get your data back, it marks you as a target for repeat attacks, and it funds the criminal ecosystem. The far better position is simply not needing the key at all.

Backups are your leverage

If you can restore your data from a clean copy, ransomware loses its power. A strong backup strategy has three properties:

  • Automated — it happens without anyone remembering to run it.
  • Encrypted & off-site — so the backup itself can’t be stolen or encrypted.
  • Tested — restores are verified regularly, so you know they work.

Recovery is a plan, not a hope

The time to think about recovery is before an incident. We set up automated, encrypted backups and a tested recovery process, so if the worst happens, you’re back up in hours — not weeks.
